Gay Guide Gay Map Gay Events

You'll find four gay bars in Budapest, all within the greater ring streat on the Pest side. Don't expect huge venues, for some reason, Budapest's gay scene never had big gay pubs or bars. Best time are weekends and late evening. No one bar can be said to have a typical crowd. It's all pretty mixed.

You'll find all the usual alcohols available in Hungary, as well as local beers and the local pride and joy "pálinka" (fruit brandy). If you are lucky, you'll be able to attend a pálinka festival in Budapest and taste the various concoctions from the very sweet to the very hot. Hungary also has an active wine industry and a special desert wine called Tokaj.

Budapest is quite famous for numerous amounts of "romkocsmák" (ruin pub). The basic idea is a watering hole set up in an old abandoned building with the least amount of investment. Some have become quite famous, others just last a Summer. But even though the ruin pubs are not gay bars, you must see one, when you are in Budapest. Ask your hotel for adresses or check out Time out magazine.
